Living with an ostomy involves navigating a host of physical challenges—changes in body function, managing a stoma, and dealing with discomfort and anxiety. But beyond the physical, ostomy patients face profound mental and emotional hurdles.
This 10th edition of Beyond Limits charity expeditions is not just about a six-day trek through the stunning landscapes of Bhutan; it’s about understanding and empathizing with those who have faced life-altering circumstances due to ostomies, and then making a positive difference in their lives by raising funds and awareness for the Ostomy Association of Singapore.
We're excited to announce that a very significant person will be joining us on this 10th edition trek in Bhutan! Ellil is a ‘legend’ in Beyond Limits; he has joined us as a participant for the first three editions of Beyond Limits, and has consistently inspired countless individuals with his unwavering dedication and passion for making a difference. Joining us for BL10, Ellil will be bringing his invaluable experience and infectious enthusiasm to the team. Together, we’ll embark on a transformative journey, raising funds and awareness for the Ostomy Association of Singapore while celebrating Ellil's legacy!
The Reality of Living with an Ostomy
For many, life with an ostomy begins with a difficult diagnosis, often cancer-related, but not exclusively. Procedures like surgery for rectal cancer lead to the creation of a stoma—a small opening in the abdomen that allows waste to exit the body. This change can be daunting, requiring the use of ostomy bags to collect waste, and it profoundly impacts daily life.
Meet Ellil, founder of the Ostomy Association of Singapore.
In an interview with Ellil, he emphasized the multifaceted challenges faced by ostomates. Not only must they manage their physical condition, but they also grapple with emotional aspects like isolation and fear of social stigma. The costs of ostomy supplies can be overwhelming, often not covered by insurance or government assistance. For those struggling financially, this can lead to a decreased quality of life and further isolation.
The Ostomy Association of Singapore is here to provide essential support to ostomates. They offer psychosocial support, educational resources, and assistance with obtaining necessary supplies. Their efforts extend to advocating for improved public amenities to ensure that ostomates can live more comfortably and confidently in society.
Importantly, they also provide financial aid for ostomy supplies, ensuring that those in need can maintain their dignity and health. Through partnerships with social workers, they verify needs and provide the required products directly, ensuring that no one is left without the essentials.

More about the Jomolhari – Soi Yaksa Trek
The most challenging part of this six-day trekking route would be its steep climbs, rugged terrains, deep descents, and some rough scrambling. You’ll reach altitudes up to 4,890m within the five days of trekking, where you’ll cover a total distance of about 90km. You will also experience sleeping at high altitudes up to 4180m! Despite these challenges, the trek is generally moderate. Be ready for quickly changing weather conditions on exposed ridges. Rest assured, the expedition leaders will consult with the Bhutan team to prioritize everyone's safety if necessary.

Note: Our BE team will be handling all flights on your behalf, so if you have any specific request, such as longer layovers or an earlier/ later departure to and from Bhutan, let us know and we can arrange it for you.
Upon our arrival in Paro at 4.45pm (GMT+6), our BE Bhutan team will greet us at Paro International Airport for a swift 15-minute transfer to your hotel. Nestled in the heart of western Bhutan, Paro Valley is a breathtaking sanctuary that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Surrounded by towering peaks and lush, terraced fields, this picturesque valley stands at an altitude of 2,200 meters, making it a perfect starting point for our Bhutanese adventure.
As we explore Paro, prepare to be enchanted by its serene landscapes and ancient temples. The valley is home to the majestic Paro Dzong, a fortress-monastery that rises impressively above the town, and the iconic Kyichu Temple, a revered 7th-century Buddhist site that marks Bhutan’s spiritual beginnings.
In the evening, embark on a leisurely nature hike from Olathang to the 7th-century Kyichu Temple, a revered Buddhist landmark. The hike, lasting 2-4 hours depending on our pace, will help us acclimate for the upcoming trek. After the hike, we will enjoy a dinner to refuel and recharge our hearts, before settling in for a good night’s rest.

Trekking Distance: approximately 6.4 km, 5-6 hours
Today, we embark on a trek to the legendary Paro Taktsang, or Tiger's Nest, perched at 3,210 meters on a dramatic cliffside in upper Paro Valley. This iconic pilgrimage leads us through a moderate 4-5 hour hike, depending on your group’s pace and energy.
The trail winds through dense pine forests, scenic clearings, and rocky terrain, offering glimpses of cascading waterfalls plunging from a 2,000-foot vertical cliff. Paro Taktsang, built in 1692, is said to be blessed by Guru Rinpoche, a revered tantric master from the 8th century. The monastery complex features four main temples and several interconnected dwellings, perched precariously on the cliff with staircases carved into the rock—adding a thrilling adrenaline rush to your journey.
This sacred site, visited by legendary Buddhist saints and treasure discoverers, is a must-see. The awe-inspiring views and spiritual ambiance make it the perfect backdrop for memorable photos and a profound experience of Bhutan's mystical heritage. It serves as the perfect ‘warm-up’ for our first day of trekking tomorrow!
We’ll end the day with a warm, fulfilling dinner—replenishing our energy and spirits—before settling in for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Trekking Distance: approximately 4.5 km, 1.5-2 hours
Today, we drive north from Paro town, passing the historic Drukgyel Dzong, a fortress pivotal to Bhutanese heritage. We will continue through charming villages until the motorable road ends at Sharna Zam bridge. Here, embark on a short acclimatization trek along the Pachhu (Paro River). The trail meanders through coniferous forests, blue pines, maple, larch, and rhododendrons, with a series of ascents and descents.
After 1.5 to 2 hours, we’ll arrive at Shingkarap, a stone house at 3,110 meters. This area offers scenic spots for camping and a perfect setting to soak in the tranquility of the surroundings, as we share a well-deserved dinner before settling in for a good night’s rest.

Trekking Distance: 16 km, 6 hour
Marvel at the breathtaking vistas of mountain peaks and yak pastures as we trek onward on Day 2. Today’s trek will bring you through familiar vegetation with a gentle ascent alongside the Pachhu River, leading us to a wooden bridge at 3,560 meters. A short walk from the bridge brings us to a picturesque meadow, where Jomolhari towers majestically at the head of the valley. This is Thangthangkha campsite, situated at 3,630 meters, offering a serene and stunning backdrop for our stay.
As the day winds down, we’ll gather for a well-deserved meal, refueling our bodies and lifting our hearts, before resting up for the adventures ahead

Trekking Distance: 19 km, 5,6 hours
Today’s trek will take us above the treeline at 3,770 meters, gaining significant elevation. Starting from the camp, we’ll ascend towards the army camp, following the river as it meanders through the treeless expanse. Enjoy breathtaking views of surrounding peaks, pass by a mani wall, and enter expansive yak pastures.
The final stretch includes crossing a plateau, a stream bed, and Dangochang village before arriving at the spectacular Jangothang campsite at 4,090 meters. From here, we’ll be treated to panoramic views of Mount Jomolhari (7,314 m) and Mount Jichu Drake (6,989 m), as we feast, laugh, and recharge—because nothing fuels the soul like good food and great company before a restful sleep.

Trekking Distance: 16 km, 6,7 hours
The trail guides us to the final settlement in the valley before descending to the Pachhu (Paro River). Along the way, we’ll pass the serene Tshophu Lake at 4,380 meters. From there, a steep climb will lead us to Bhonte La Pass at 4,890 meters, the highest point of the trek. After crossing the pass, the path descends sharply, winding through yak trails to reach the Dhumzo Chhu (Dhumzo River). Continue downstream, passing a few houses in Soi Yaksa (Dhumzo), before arriving at our campsite for the night.
A rewarding dinner awaits us after the trek, filling us with comfort and energy, before we retreat into a night of deep, well-earned rest.

Trekking Distance: 11 km, 4,5 hours
In June, we’ll have the chance to witness the stunning Blue Poppies, Bhutan’s national flower, in full bloom. The trail begins with a climb of 100 meters over a ridge before dropping down to a stream. After crossing the stream, it ascends the hillside, leading into a small valley before reaching another ridge. The route then heads south, climbing to Takhung La Pass at 4,520 meters. From there, descend to Thombu Shong at 4,180 meters, where yak herders' huts provide a scenic and rustic resting spot.
A rewarding meal and a moment of quiet reflection will conclude day 7, and set the perfect tone for a night of deep and well-earned rest.

Today, we’re trekking to Thombu La Pass at 4,380 meters, then descending gradually through coniferous forests and alpine flora. The trail descends steeply, eventually reaching Gunitsawa Village at 2,730 meters. Here, our vehicle will be ready to transport us back to Paro. Upon arrival, we shall unwind with a traditional hot stone bath and spend your evening exploring the charming town of Paro. We’ll also savor a satisfying dinner, reflect on our journey, and rest under the stars, ready for another day of discovery.

Driving Distance and Time: 50 km, 1.5 hour (one-way)
We’ll drive to the stunning capital city, Thimphu, and explore its landmark sites such as the Buddha Statue and Memorial Chorten. On the way there, we’ll visit the Tachogang temple and delve into the legacy of Drubthob Thangtong Gyalpo, the renowned iron-bridge builder, who, in his lifetime (1385–1485), constructed 118 ferries, 120 temples, 111 stupas, and 60 wooden bridges across Tibet, China, and Bhutan. In Bhutan alone, he built 8 rust-resistant iron-chain footbridges, showcasing his extraordinary engineering prowess.
Upon arriving in Thimphu, we’ll head to Kuensel Phodrang to view the Buddha Dordenma Statue, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, standing at 169 feet. From this vantage point, enjoy panoramic views of Thimphu city.
We’ll also get to join the locals in their daily circumambulation around the Memorial Chorten, a stupa built in 1974 in honor of the late Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. We’ll then explore the Royal Textile Academy, established in 2005, to delve into Bhutan’s rich textile history and weaving traditions.
We’ll stroll through the craft market, where you can find authentic crafts created by rural Bhutanese artisans. In the evening, we’ll then return to Paro for a cultural show and farewell dinner, concluding our memorable journey.

As the sun rises on your final day in Bhutan, the BE Bhutan team will bid us a fond farewell as we embark on our journey back to Singapore. They will be there to see us off at the airport, ensuring a seamless transition as we get ready to embark on our flight at 7.50am (GMT+6).

We had Zoe, a cancer survivor, join us for Beyond Limits 4, a 50km trek across an icy lake at temperatures plunging below -20 degrees celsius to raise funds for the Singapore Cancer Society. We had Jiaying, who flew to frosty Taiga with us for BL6, looking to support our cause for young cancer patients, but left with a heart full of inspiration, appreciation, and a deeper, loving connection with her mother who she was also caring for, before her succumbing to cancer.
We had Irisha, an inspirational breast cancer survivor who showed us what true strength and tenacity looks like in BL7. And here’s also a visual ‘journal’ of what our participants went through for BL7, because pictures can speak to you about a journey in ways that words cannot.

We greatly prioritize the makeup of the team, and thus go through a strictly selective process to ensure we honor the meaning of why we do the expedition in the first place. There may be instances where cars break down, or weather conditions take a turn for the worse. Regardless, the country’s locals know the land like the back of their hand, and have kept our team safe throughout the years. We love and respect the people of the land we visit, and we trust them to show us the ropes.
If you can't trust the locals, then maybe you should stay home and watch a travel show instead! But, if you're down to learn from and trust the people who know the land best, then you'll feel right at home.

For this expedition, we will appoint team leaders within the group to lead each small ‘pod’ (3-4 members each).
Your team leader is there to ensure the well-being of you and your respective team members, working hand in hand with our overall-in-charge, Scott, to ensure everyone’s safety and the expedition runs smoothly. So, if you're the type of person who likes to go rogue, then this might not be the adventure for you.

After receiving your sign-up application, we may have a short coffee session with you to understand you better and see if you’re a fit for the expedition before confirming your place on the team. Beyond Limits is not for everyone!
Once you’re confirmed a spot on the expedition team, a payment of 50% non-refundable deposit will secure you a spot for 1x Beyond Limits 10 group expedition, taking place from 27th November - 6th December 2025. The total price for the trip is S$7,990 nett inclusive of flights. The remaining 50% is to be paid 8 weeks prior to tour commencement.

Upon committing to sign up by placing a deposit, we expect each participant to exemplify responsibility and accountability within the team. This entails active participation in fundraising efforts, spreading awareness of the campaign, and a firm commitment not to withdraw. It's imperative to understand that this is a charity expedition, not just a leisurely holiday trip, so please review our Terms and Conditions for comprehensive guidelines before signing up.
It's worth noting that extensive planning, marketing, logistical arrangements, including fund disbursements in both Singapore and Bhutan, are meticulously executed for every "Beyond Limits" expedition. Participants should be aware that withdrawal is only considered in extraordinary circumstances, primarily health-related issues or urgent family matters. In such cases, individuals are encouraged to utilize their own travel insurance, and we are more than willing to provide the necessary travel memo to support any claims.

All proceeds will be donated to the Ostomy Association of Singapore, founded by one of our very own participants, Ellil. Our funds will focus on supporting the organisation to provide essential support to ostomates. They offer psychosocial support, educational resources, and assistance with obtaining necessary supplies.

Our charity expedition will accommodate a maximum of 20 participants, which includes 1 to 3 of our dedicated BE expedition leaders. In addition, we will be joined by our Bhutan support crew, comprising of guides, cook and drivers.
If you plan to embark on this journey solo, there's no need to be concerned. We make it a point to organize 3-4 group training sessions in Singapore, providing an excellent opportunity for everyone to connect and build bonds before setting out on the expedition in Bhutan. Stay excited as we welcome you into this exceptional community of like-minded expeditioners and friends.

Do refer to the segment above, where we’d already inserted the itinerary! We'll also be holding a more in-depth sharing during the official briefing session with confirmed participants to go through the detailed itinerary, safety precautions, contingency plans and all other relevant information. This session will take place usually 2-3 months before the expedition at our office usually on a weekday evening or weekend.

Yes, we’ll be trekking 4.5-19km a day (subject to changing local weather conditions), with a total distance of about 85km. You should self-train and have several long distance trekking sessions in Singapore under your belt before the trip. But don’t worry because we’ll hold frequent team trainings in Singapore too! We’ve had charity expeditioners over 60 years old. Our mantra is, “Leave no man behind.”
Participants with specific medical conditions must seek a professional doctor’s clearance for the trip.

We'll have 3 local Bhutanese guides supporting us on the expedition and 2-3 cooks. They'll be able to prepare different types of cuisine. Try anything from traditional Bhutanese food to western fare! Halal, vegetarian and vegan options are all available.
And calling all vegetarians, vegans and Halal eaters! Do note that your food options will not be as fancy as compared to those with a typical diet, as reviewed by past travellers who have opted for these diets while on our expeditions!
Regardless, if you have any dietary requirements, please do not hesitate to let any Beyond Expeditions team member know and we will ensure that you can experience as much of the Bhutanese cuisine whilst maintaining your dietary preferences.

In the capital city, Paro, we’ll be staying in three-star hotels (twin-sharing rooms paired by gender). During the days of the trek, we’ll camp at various campsites of different altitudes every night in two-men tents.
You will sleep in four-season sleeping bags suitable for sub-zero temperatures.
After the trek ends on Day 8, we will stay in a three-star hotel (twin-sharing rooms paired by gender) in Paro for the last few days of the expedition.

Bhutan stands out as one of the world's safest destinations for tourists. Our local Bhutanese drivers and guides boast extensive experience in navigating diverse terrains and assessing on-the-ground conditions. Many of our seasoned drivers and guides have accrued over a decade or even two of expertise in adventure travel.
Additionally, our BE expedition leaders are well-versed in safety protocols during our expeditions. They are fully equipped with satellite phones and comprehensive first aid kits to ensure your well-being throughout the journey.
As we embark on our expedition, we will have support horses accompanying us, transporting vital provisions such as food, water, tents, and essential items we need during the trek. We will also have one local nurse with us during the trek, to take care of any injuries or health-related issues we may encounter.
Do note that, should unexpected weather changes occur, we have alternative plans in place to ensure the expedition continues, albeit with potential adjustments to the original itinerary.
For your peace of mind, we will conduct an official briefing session for all confirmed participants. This session will provide you with a detailed itinerary, packing list, scenario-based questions, and essential safety precautions, among other crucial information. Your safety and well-being remain our top priorities throughout the expedition.
